How To Update The Arlo Camera Firmware Manually?

Firmware is the least cared-about aspect of an electronic device. It won’t be an exaggeration to term firmware as the soul of your device. Now, ensuring that this aspect of your camera remains in its best shape would require you to keep it updated at all times. This would also help minimize camera downtime and allow it to remain functional. Most Arlo camera firmware updates take place automatically between 03:00a.m. to 05:00a.m. However, you can always update the same manually. If you were looking for the steps to update your camera’s firmware, this blog will walk you through the complete steps.

Important

Arlo Camera firmware might require the use of cellular data to download. Minor updates that occur every three months may be up to 8MB, while the major ones can be as large as 52MB. Therefore, to avoid extra data charges, it is recommended that you use a fast WiFi connection.

Updating Arlo Ultra/ Pro 3/ Pro 2/ Pro/ Wire-free Firmware

Here are some steps you can follow to update the firmware version on your Arlo Ultra, Pro 3, Pro 2, Pro, and Wire-free cameras:

  • Launch the Arlo app on your smartphone or log into my.arlo.com web address.
  • Tap on click on the Settings button and then select the My Devices option.
  • Next, select the name of the camera that you wish to update the firmware for.
  • Tap or click on Device Info>Firmware and finally, Update.

The firmware update process will now begin. Your Arlo camera might restart a few times during the update process. Make sure you don’t turn off the camera or remove the battery.

You will see the LED on your camera blink alternating blue and amber. The camera LED will now turn off for about one to two minutes while the Arlo camera firmware is updating itself. Once the firmware update is over, your camera will sync to the base station and the LED will blink blue rapidly.

If you are trying to update your Arlo Q, Q Plus or Go camera firmware versions as well, you can follow the same steps as discussed. Just make sure you don’t remove or turn off the Arlo cameras while the update is in progress.

Updating the SmartHub/Base Station firmware manually

Here are some steps you can follow to update the Arlo SmartHub or Base Station’s firmware version:

  • Launch the Arlo App on your smartphone or log into my.arlo.com web setup wizard.
  • Tap or click on the Settings menu and then select My Devices from the menu.
  • Select the SmartHub or Base Station from the list of the devices that show up.
  • Now, click on the Device Info button and then select the Firmware section to finally click on the Update button.

Your Arlo camera firmware will now start to update. You’ll be able to see the status of the update process on the app itself. The power LED on the base station will blink green while the firmware is downloading and installing. Once the firmware is installed, the base station will reboot and the power LED on the device will light amber. Once the power and internet light will glow solid green, the update process is over.

Troubleshooting Firmware Update Error 4208

As long as your Arlo camera is connected to the SmartHub or Base Station, firmware updates will happen automatically. However, if an error is encountered, you can always follow the steps to troubleshoot the same:

  • Check the network connectivity and ensure that the device is connected to the internet.
  • Check the internet speeds that you are able to receive by performing a speed test. If the internet speeds are low, you might need to connect with your ISP(Internet Service Provider) for a resolution.
  • Move your Arlo device closer to the Arlo Base Station, Arlo SmartHub or the WiFi router to initiate the Arlo Camera firmware update process.
  • If the firmware still does not update, remove the camera from the Arlo account and reinstall the same. To remove the device from the Arlo account, head to the Arlo app settings and select the My Devices section. Here, from the list of devices that you see, select the camera that you wish to remove.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and then tap/click on the Remove Device button.
  • Now, tap on the Yes button to confirm the device removal from the account.

Note: if you are looking to remove your Arlo Wi-Free or Arlo Pro camera from the myarlo account, you’ll need to make sure that the Base Station/SmartHub is in Disarmed mode. Once the device has been removed, you can reinstall the device to your account by following the directions in the Arlo app. The firmware will update during the reinstallation process itself.
